Naval Architecture in the Department
Naval Architecture began at UCL in the early 1960s when the late Professor Bishop initiated a major programme to develop a more scientific basis for the subject than had existed before. This work was recognised in 1967 when the Ministry of Defence (MoD) transferred the teaching of its civilian naval architects to UCL from the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. This link with the MoD has remained through to today in spite of several reorganisations. Five of the current standard textbooks on Naval Architecture have been written by members or ex-members of the department.
Naval Architecture is taught from within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It represents a major interest in that four of the department's six professors carry out research within the field of marine technology. The department also offers specialist one-year MSc degree programmes in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering as well as MPhil and PhD degrees by research. Students on the MEng degree programme have the opportunity to take their third year in the USA at the Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ.
The department is known for its informal style of teaching, stemming from good relations between students and staff. This atmosphere is vitally important, creating as it does, the best environment for learning.
