MSc in Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering
Duration: Full time for 12 months or part time flexible learning spread over up to 5 years.
Start Date: Late September each year.
Entry: At least a 2-ii degree in science, engineering or a degree in medicine. All candidates must satisfy UCL's English language requirements.
Introduction
A taught masters programme, which will deliver state-of-the-art knowledge in Biomaterials, Bioengineering, Tissue Engineering, Medical Engineering and related management topics at masters level via lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical sessions. The taught part of the programme is followed by a research project. The programme is designed to be inter-disciplinary and attractive to physical science, engineering and life sciences graduates, including those with qualifications in medicine. The major educational aims are to provide:
- an advanced knowledge of topics in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering and in associated subjects,
- a wide range of intellectual, practical and transferable skills that will allow students to develop a flexible professional career in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering,
- an awareness of the context in which healthcare engineering operates, in terms of safety, environmental, social and economic aspects.
Degree Programme Structure
The taught component consists of eight modules:
- Biomaterials
- Tissue Engineering
- Biofluids and Medical Devices
- Biomechanics and Biostructures
- Applications of Biomedical Engineering
- Bioengineering
- Medical Imaging
- Evaluation and Planning of Business Opportunities in Bioprocessing and Life Sciences
Modules are taught by several experts in UCL and involve mainly the Department of Mechanical Engineering with contributions from the Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering Centre of the Academic Division of Surgical & Interventional Sciences, the Department of Medical Physics & Bioengineering, the Department of Biochemical Engineering and the Institute of Orthopedics & Musculoskeletal Science.
Individual Project
The second part of the programme, from Easter to September, is spent on an individual project under the supervision of a member of academic staff. The student normally selects the project from a list of projects proposed by the department's staff and other partners (see above). In some cases students may suggest their own project topic provided a member of staff is willing to adopt and supervise that project. The output from good projects is regularly presented at conferences and published in journals.
